Brunswick House was a carefully composed transformation of a heritage home—an interplay between preservation and contemporary expression.

Designed for Billy and Peter as they transitioned from apartment living into their first garden home, the project sought to honour the original character of the house while introducing a bold yet respectful new addition. Heritage elements like fireplaces, cornices, and skirtings were retained at the front, while the rear unfolded into four distinct, light-filled modules—each responding to function, orientation, and the site’s natural constraints. From the soaring living space to a north-aligned kitchen and a pergola shaded by deciduous vines, every move was deliberate, creating a layered and deeply considered extension.

Though the project was never realised due to rising costs during COVID, its spirit endures - a vision shaped by clarity, care, and the belief that thoughtful design can hold both history and future in equal measure.

We had lots of ideas for our project, which Alex listened to and translated into the design process, providing expert advice and proposing alternatives that achieved our aims when our specific ideas weren't practicable. She also deftly navigated us through the various permit processes, which made things much less stressful for us.
